Post seminar summary: Higher-order resources in strategic management

By: Oliver Baumann

Location: University of Southern Denmark

April 6th, 2017

Management scholars have explained the superior profitability of some firms by the characteristics of the resources that these firms are holding. Apple, for instance, can command high prices and attract customers because of its brand, among else. Moreover, in the past two decades, scholars have been interested in firm’s abilities to develop and improve such valuable resources. (The discussion around “dynamic capabilities” is part of that quest, for instance.) But whether such higher-order resources affect firms’ profit patterns is a tricky question to address empirically. In the paper that Phebo Wibbens from the Wharton School presented in the SOD seminar, he proposes that using an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model offers advantages over existing approaches. Applying this model to a 30-year panel of US firms suggests that higher-order resources may play a substantial role in explaining profit persistence patterns.

The Curious Anomaly of Skewed Judgment Distributions and Systematic Error in the Wisdom of Crowds

Ulrik W. Nash

PLOS ONE journal

To the general public who read Surowiecki’s (2004) bestseller, it almost seemed like magic. To neoclassic economists, the wisdom of crowds was real enough (Muth, 1961, Lucas, 1978). In this paper, published in the Public Library of Science (PLoS ONE), Assistant Professor Nash predicts and reports systematic error in our collective intelligence.
